About

Who is Joe Webster and why should I care?
Great questions. Glad you asked.
Professionally I’m these things
- Electrical Engineer from Colorado State University
- Software Architect at Trustwave
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
- Microsoft Certified Software Developer (MCSD)
- IEEE Senior Member
- A number of other things that I’ve received training in and certifications for.
Personally I’m these things
- Musician – I’m a keyboardist.
- Digital audio enthusiast – I use Propellerheads Reason, Cockos Reaper and Apple Logic Pro.
- Eclectic music fan – Find out what I’m currently listening to on my iPhone and various iPods.
- Poker player – Even though I know that gambling is a tax on people who can’t do math, I still enjoy it and manage to mostly break even.
- Family guy – Husband, father, son, brother… you get the picture (I even look a little like Peter Griffin).
Also in case it isn’t obvious, I like lists. A lot. And I’m a big fan of Getting Things Done (GTD).
So if you disregard the paranoia, neuroses and other mental and psychic quirks that make me a swell security guy I’m pretty normal.
And I might have some ideas on how you can improve your security posture. Or not – and you can argue with me.
Anything written here is totally me. My employer has nothing to do with it, doesn’t endorse it and isn’t responsible in any way for it.

hey joe, now that you’re not on facebook i don’t know how to reach out to you from work. i was just going to refer you to this story: http://news.yahoo.com/stolen-nasa-laptop-had-space-station-control-codes-003203295.html
but i’m sure you already know all about it.
have you by any chance read the recent wayne shorter biography “footprints”? one interesting tidbit, he and zawinul would throw down a half dozen double scotches each before all the weather report shows. ow.
how do you feel about using AIM to communicate? i’m sure it’s very full of holes and you loathe it. ah well. also, yesterday i read a pre-release review of windows 8. larry mentioned you’ve been using it for awhile now. can you confirm that their upcoming version of IE “does not support Flash”? for the past decade the flashplayer has been preinstalled as part of IE. consequently the flashplayer is the most ubiquitous plugin in, installed in 98% of computers worldwide. so does the reviewer mean that it will no longer be preinstalled, but that users can still self-install? or for some technical reason it flat will not work? seems a bit crazy to do that, being as how banner ads (the primary revenue generator, tho everybody professes to hate them) are ALL in flash now. what does that mean? going back to animated gifs? using MS’s horrible silverlight, which won’t work elsewhere? trying to code banners in html5, jquery or javascript? what will my next career be? i will be very depressed if i have to become a straightup html coder, that shit is awful. i’m a decent aftereffects video editor, but it’s tedious and not near as much fun as writing actionscript. brad johnson says his crew of 25 fulltime flash developers is down to 5. wtf?
feel free to delete this after reading, i’m sure you don’t want to clutter your blog with my ramblings.
